Accounts by people who knew him make clear that Kit Carson, though not in appearance but in character, was a remarkable man. Not withstanding his exploits as a trapper, explorer, military man, guide to Lt.Fremont on the California expeditions and Indian agent, he remained thoroughly honest, modest, decent, courageous yet gentle, and personally loyal. Illiterate in all but signing his name, his skills and good judgement caused him to reach the rank of Brigadier General in the New Mexico Volunteers. Good accounts of him have been written by Sabin (Kit Carson Days ) and Carter (Dear Old Kit). For much of his life he made headquarters in Taos where his house is now a museum.
